Adopt Blaze a Tan/Yellow/Fawn American Pit Bull Terrier dog in Philadelphia

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Description:

"My mission is to keep the light in your eyes a-BLAZE... - Alanis Morrisette Blaze is a 5-year-old male who came in as an owner surrender on 3/30. After his person of 5 years passed away, a family member surrendered Blaze due to being unable to care for him. Blaze has, understandably, shown increasingly stressed tendencies in-shelter. He so badly wants to go back to the way he used to be: in a home with adults, living the life. Can you help keep the light in Blazes eyes from being extinguished? Read what ACCT friends have to say about Blaze: Per staff on 4/5, "Was alerted that a volunteer was outside with Blaze and had clipped him to a play yard fence for safety reasons. I went out to get Blaze and bring him inside. The volunteer told me that he had taken Blaze on a walk offsite and while on the sidewalk, Blaze got a bit tangled in the leash, it got in his mouth, and then he began tugging at it and (play) growling. He was untangled after for a bit, but and the volunteer was able to get him back onsite by the covered run, when Blaze began jumping up on him and leash biting and tugging without redirection. When I arrived, Blaze was pulling in many different directions while clipped, was excessively panting with red eyes and a red nose. I unclipped him and he jumped up right away and began leash biting. He was tugging it, so I followed him with it and then got it back behind his head. He did get briefly distracted by a dog through the fence in the covered run and was very interested in interaction. We walked back and Blaze was pulling quite hard and would occasionally attempt to leash bite again. Went back into kennel without issue." During a behavioral evaluation on 3/31, staff noted: "Despite Blaze's intense eyes he was a very good and friendly boy outside. he remained stressed would try to self soothe and get comfort from his handlers. He would solicit attention frequently and would lean in and curl up against me while I pet him. he would often flop over for belly rubs as well. Did well meeting multiple handlers. Took treats gently when offered showing knowledge of sit and shake." During an intake exam on 3/30, staff found Blaze to be apparently healthy with no obvious signs of illness or injury. On 4/3, Blaze was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and treated with doxycycline. On 4/5 Medical staff determined that Blaze was becoming increasingly stressed while in the shelter and prescribed Clonidine. On 4/9 it was determined that Clonodine was proving ineffective for Blaze and he was switched to trazadone and gabapentin. Making friends as an adult can be hard -- but it doesn't have to be. If you want a happy-go-lucky bud with the wildest, most fascinating stare you've ever seen, this is your guy.
