This handsome fellow is Blaze! He’s 3 years old, weighs twenty-five pounds and is ready to find his forever family. There’s nothing Blaze likes more than sitting on the laps of his foster family and basking in their attention – except maybe snacking on his favorite yak cheese chews! Playing the “Cheerios Game” is another favorite pastime for Blaze. This is a simple form of nose work that allows him to satisfy his need to “sniff all the things” and get rewarded for it by finding the Cheerios that have been placed in the yard for him to find. If he gets into something he shouldn’t, he is easily redirected to a more suitable activity. Blaze also loves playing with toys, and he’ll need sturdy, durable ones as he very much enjoys chewing on them! Blaze is housetrained and crate trained. He eats in his crate, and when his people go out, is he crated as well. He needs a home with minimal alone time; he prefers to be with his people as much as possible. He will bark when left alone, so he’s not cut out to be an apartment dweller. When it’s time for bed, Blaze prefers to sleep on the downstairs couch – he doesn’t enjoy sleeping in his crate and will bark his displeasure at doing so. Before he arrived at his foster home, Blaze had lived outside his entire life, and he doesn’t seem to have been socialized with other dogs. He becomes quite anxious when the other dogs in the house play, become excited or crowd him, so Blaze requires a home where he can be the only pet. From the start, Blaze was very interested in human attention but was very shy, so his foster family consulted a veterinary behavioral specialist to see what could be done to make Blaze more comfortable. The specialist prescribed daily anti-anxiety medications, and they’ve made a world of difference – Blaze now eagerly seeks attention and affection from his foster family and happily showers them with beagle kisses. He also had difficulty sleeping, so he takes medication that allows him to restfully sleep through the night. Blaze will need to remain on these medications so he doesn’t lose any of the ground he’s gained and remains comfortable. Blaze is happy to receive attention from men and women alike. He has been around children who are 3 and 7 years old, and he did very well with them. Car rides are simply a breeze with Blaze, so he would make an excellent traveling companion. Walks are something that he enjoys as well. He tends to pull at first because he’s so excited about being able go out and explore the world, but after a few minutes, he calms down nicely. With the love and support of his foster family, Blaze has transformed into an affectionate, playful companion who is now ready to make his way into your heart and find his forever home.
