Adopt Lani a Brindle American Pit Bull Terrier dog in Philadelphia

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Description:

Lani (ACCT-A-160377) is a sweet female mixed breed dog who was found roaming as a stray on December 23rd. She was luckily found by a good samaritan who brought her to the shelter in hopes that her owner would come for her. Unfortunately no one came looking and she has spent her days waiting for her furever person to pass by her kennel and fall in love. Her finder described her as being friendly and shy while she was in their care. Timestamped in January, but taken into foster care on 1/18 and just recently returned to the shelter (3/22), Lani is eager to find her real forever with someone who can give her the undivided attention and playtime she deserves. Per staff on 3/23: I saw Lani jumping up in her kennel, so I got her out for some activity time. Lani was doing parkour off her door, practically back flipping! When I went to get her out she was on the opposite side of the kennel, but came right up when called. She was surprisingly patient for leashing; she knows how this works! She let me leash her easily and hopped right out! Lani didn't pull too much and walked nicely to the eval room. Once we got to the room it was zoom time! Lani raced around the room, looking for any discarded treats and toys. I threw some toys around for her which she chased, but didn't really bring back. She was more worried about just running as fast as possible! While she was zooming around she didn't jump on me or mouth me, so she was pretty respectful with her energy. She would even stop and sit for the next toy to be thrown. After she got all her crazies out she paced around the room panting. She obviously isn't super happy to be back at the shelter. I knelt down with her and gave her some pets and scratches. She kicked her leg when I got just the right spot on her side, but got a little overwhelmed with the feeling and very lightly mouthed my hand to tell me to stop. As soon as I stopped, she stopped as well. I gave her some treats which she took so so gently, and she showed me how good she is at "sit". When it was time to go back I grabbed her some extra toys to occupy herself with in kennel. Hopefully that helps her with her jumping and arousal. When we got back to her kennel she wouldn't go in until I stepped in with her. I gave her her toys and got her some fresh water, which she drank happily. Due to needing to be out of the area for a time, and a temporary foster home not working out due Lani's dog-reactivity and separation anxiety, Lani was returned to the shelter on 3/21. Per Lani's foster on 2/3, "House training is improving. She does well with peeing outside for 95% of the time and pooping outside 85% of the time. We have been trying to kennel train her due to her not being fully house trained and that has been quite difficult. We are building up time slowly, feeding her in the kennel and playing games in it but she still gets very upset when you close the door even for short periods. We tried to leave her in the kennel for a few short hours the other day as build up as she did ok being left in there for an hour. Yesterday evening we noticed that she was pulling at the kennel bars and appears to have a complicated crown fracture of her left upper canine (204) that I wanted to notify you of so I could be checked by your vet when she is spayed. Additionally would it be possible to obtain gabapentin or trazodone for her to help reduce anxiety for kennel training? Due to her being so anxious in a kennel I can't take her to work with me (as she would cry in the runs and be disruptive) but I also cannot leave her alone in the kennel for any real time period right now. Vintage Lani notes: She was given a clean bill of health when examined by our medical team besides a small wound on her ear, mild superficial pyoderma, and gingival bleeding which they believe may have resulted from chewing. They noted that she was very friendly and loving during all medical exams. She was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection on December 29th and as of January 14th, is still being treated by an antibiotic for persisting symptoms. She is currently scheduled to be on medication until January 24th. Lani has been such a lovely resident in the shelter! She is such a sweet and affectionate girl who loves spending time with canine and human friends alike. She has attended multiple playgroup sessions with other dogs and has done great - she is more of a rowdy player and would do best with dogs that can match her play and energy style. She is all ready for a new home, is reported to be housebroken, and even does well in a car and declares herself passenger princess. When out for walks, she likes to try to say hi to every new potential friend she passes. Lani is a certified good girl who would thrive in any home as long as she is given ample decompression time to de-stress from the shelter environment. Notes from shelter friends: Notes from a Day Trip on 1/11: I got to spend the afternoon taking Lani for a long walk. This dog has a great zest for life. She really enjoyed the car ride and moved herself into shotgun on the way to the trail. She has a very impressive jump of excitement when she sees other dogs. She gets serious airtime, and can do a 180 while midair!! Unfortunately , we are not allowed to say hi on daytrips, but she was very easily redirected with treats which she takes very nicely. She wanted to say hi to every human and was very gentle, and accepting of pets. We passed a toddler in the middle of a screaming tantrum and she stared curiously as if she wanted to go help. Back at my house she had some dinner, and did not jump up on the counter, while I was preparing human food for my family. instead, she smushed herself into me to get my attention. She accepted gentle pets, and when I tried to get more playful, she wagged her tail, got overexcited and tried mounting. Not much interest in toys, but she kept herself busy with a bone. Once back in the car, she finally settled in the back for a nap. I wish I had a fenced in area to really let her run and play which I think is what she would really love to do Per staff on 12/27: Lani is definitely a rough and rowdy player. In playgroup, she was very friendly towards all of the dogs but was very high energy and pushy. She was jumping on dogs, over dogs, and on the people in the yard. She greeted each dog happily, but was too much for some of the gentler dogs. She got along with some of the rowdy selective dogs as well. Per staff on 12/24: Lani is so sweet! I took her outside and she calmly walked by my side and used the bathroom a bit. She was very easy to handle on leash and looked up at me often and gave mid level wags. She also was very happy to see Bingo through a fence, and was loose and wiggly with soft eyes. We went inside to the eval room and she calmly explored, just sniffing around. She allowed all over handling staying loose and wiggly and would gently lean in. She is super well mannered and easy to handle. Sniffed some treats but didn't take them.
