Adopt Chino a White American Pit Bull Terrier dog in Philadelphia, PA (41552812)
Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Description:
Chino ACCT-A-163909 is a 1-year-old male who came in as an owner surrender on 5/25 with Big Man (ACCT-A-163908), after their original owner, a trucker who is regularly out of state, left them with an uncle in November 2023. The uncle lost touch with his nephew in February and was unable to keep up with Chino and Big Man's care. Behavioral notes: During a second outing into the eval room shortly after his initial assessment, Chino displayed noticeably looser, more relaxed, playful body language. See videos below. During an initial behavioral assessment on 5/26, staff noted: "Chino is very fearful and scared at this time. He stayed still, frozen between the handlers for the first few minutes. He started taking treats and took them gently. He allowed some head pets but didn't lean into them. Another staff member walked in and he growled and lunged at them. They crouched down and avoided him for a few minute sand he adjusted, not continuing to react to them. Another staff member walked in again to see if he would repeat this reaction, and he did not. He was uncomfortable being around too many people, but tolerated touch well. Warmed up with time and treats, just go super slow!! He allowed and tolerated all handling we did, from paws to ears, but we did not touch his tail as it was tucked under him. Per Chino's owner on 5/25, Chino was reported to be "friendly and protective; to have lived with himself, his wife, daughter, and grandchildren; to be mostly housetrained; high energy; know "sit; walk well on leash and get excited for walks; has never bitten, but need to get to know a person and get familiar with them; can react protectively around strangers, and needs to get to know the person; reacts good around children, to the owner's knowledge; unsure how he acts around cats; and acts friendly toward other dogs. Medical notes: During an intake exam on 5/25, staff noted brown debris on both ears, dirty coat and skin with abrasions on hind legs, and were unable to closely examine Chino's mouth, teeth, and gums due to a muzzle placed as a precaution.
