Location:
West Richland, WA
Description:

This gangly young goofball is just so much fun to have around! Reese is smart, playful, snuggly - just an all round good boy! HISTORYThe five Cocoapups were very young babies in poor shape when they were dumped on a country road near Prosser, in Eastern Washington, last September. A rescuer took them in and called on HART for help. It took a while to get them healthy, and more time and work were needed to build their confidence and teach them that humans could be good - but Reese and his brothers (Heath and Rolo are also still available for adoption) have thrived in their loving foster homes, and are very ready to join their forever families. Their breed mix is a well-educated guess, since their are few certainties with dumped dogs. The adopter of one of the other Cocoapups had a DNA test done that confirmed that that mama is a Doberman. The test revealed that the papa of that particular pup is a Husky / Malamute cross, and since Reese is almost identical to that littermate we're assuming he's the same. In temperament, however, he's clearly Dobie / Goofball cross - and he has a short Dobie coat, no fluff. SOCIALIZATIONReese loves the humans he knows well, and although he's cautious around other people he warms up fast. He hasn't been around many kids, and because he's big and can be clumsy he'd probably do best sharing a home with dog-savvy kids aged 10 or older. He shares his foster home with a large pack of dogs of all ages and sizes. He is generally respectful of the grumpy old dogs, and very playful with the friendly members of the pack. When he visited a home where there was a dog-savvy cat he showed only mild interest, and when another foster dog in his current home killed a bunch of chickens he ran away and hid, because he knew that was Bad Dog behavior. Reese appears to have very little prey drive. TEMPERAMENT & BEHAVIORReese is easy to have around. He needs a good daily walk or play session, as much for the mental stimulation as for the physical exercise. But in between times he's good at just kicking back with a bone, a chew toy, or a large raw carrot. Given time to finish growing and to increase his fitness level he'd be a great companion for hikes or casual jogging, but he'll be just as happy with a family offering a less challenging exercise routine. He's an affectionate pup who loves attention - but he likes to initiate contact; if you reach to pet him he's likely to back away. Left to set the dial on petting time, Reese will check in with you at intervals to collect a hug and a kiss, and if you're upright he loves just to lean in for some skritches - but then he ambles off and continues with his day. He's not needy, and will often hang out quietly by himself. Reese loves a good chew, and although he's pretty good at knowing the difference between his toys and yours he still sometimes forgets. When there are dogs to play with he loves to wrestle and play tug or keep-away. He enjoys toys, especially stuffies and squeakers, and will chase a ball - although he hasn't yet learned to bring it back. He may become increasingly protective as he matures and gains more confidence. He already barks when visitors come to the door. When there's nothing to bark at he tends to be quiet. TRAININGReese is reliably house-trained, and will let you know when he needs to go out. He is crate trained, and will often put himself into his crate just to snooze or hang out with a toy. He's comfortable on a leash and enjoys going for leashed walks, and he usually comes when he's called (although he may stay just out of reach if he thinks he's in trouble). His house manners are good and he is rarely destructive. This boy is clearly very intelligent and eager to please. He love treats, and praise gives him the all-over-happies. Because he's growing into a big, powerful dog, he needs his human to be committed to training to ensure that he knows exactly how to behave in challenging situations - but we'd expect him to be a delight to train, and he'd love the mental challenge of going to school. PHYSICAL & HEALTH STATUSBased on their teeth and the fact that they could barely lap water, we estimated that the Cocoapups were maybe six weeks old when we took them. We have assigned them July 23, 2023 as their birthday. Reese is in good overall health, and has been neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for intestinal parasites, and microchipped. We expect him to weigh around 75 lbs when full-grown. ADOPTION INFORMATIONReese is living in a private home, and will be available to meet you after your adoption application has been approved. Please email XXXX@gmail.com to request an adoption application form. Reese's adoption fee is $425.
